Tunings, as the title of the piece Well Tempered, have always fascinated me. They are the musical equivalent of map projections.
The one I find most fascinating is probably the most common today, stretch tuning. It is a method of tuning that takes into account psycho acoustics (sounds that are generated, changed, or perceived by the ear) to make things sound more in tune, even though mathematically they deviate from natural overtones.
