and given how often different edits of films have been made for different regions, if they wanted to fixup the scene or cut it, i cant imagine it’s difficult for them
that they’re not doing so itself seems like an acquiescence

People who don’t live in Asia might have a very difficult time understanding why these things have been, and increasingly is becoming a big deal.
It might have been an low-level artist that slipped that in, but it seems more likely that the studio wanted to pre-empt a ban from China (which has happened, and they have no responsibility to explain why, because they have a yearly limit to how many foreign films they allow in their market), but didn’t think it was blatant enough to be noticed beyond a little boycott from the smaller nations.
Sure besides being in the wrong place and the wrong shape and the wrong number of dashes. Family Circus was Chinese propaganda this whole time.
Yet the studio didn’t remove it when they could have. This was found in test screenings and they still had editing time left.
I don’t think it’s so easy to dismiss as a silly coincidence.
Fanservice for the CCP.
Well, removing it after the controversy would have definitely triggered the CCP into cancelling any hopes of distribution within the Central Kingdom.
