Bbs = BS; Quality of discussion plummets

Well, I do know Discourse is designed to engender the community with moderation powers as they gain trust. The more “worth” you have , the more trust you have amongst viewers/readers, leads to you having more power under the assumption that because you are liked and valuable and trusted, that you are a paragon of the community. They call Discourse a great experiment on their website, and link to the “levels of trust” here.

As you can see, lots of this is up in the air, but eventually in stock Discourse, a basic user can end up at the top level of power given that their actions are in line with the community’s approval.

Thank you for the link, Lion!

I think you misunderstood. The complaints he refers to were complaints, pre-bbs, directed at the hosts, which were handled in a different, and (an opinion which i believe he and I share) often preferable manner.

If it was personal, it was removed.

Many people and organizations would consider saying, “Thank you for your outstanding service!” a “specific need.”

I agree with several of the points above, but I’d just like to weigh in and say that trying to recover my account was far more convoluted than it should have been. The main problem being the fact that I didn’t find out that the text field for the email address was case sensitive for several weeks (case sensitive email addresses? Really?) and there’s no indicator that this is the case, and a complete lack of feedback on why attempting to sign up had failed. Add in the lack of feedback to BB’s perennial problem with being automatically added to my blocked cookies list despite whitelisting every variation of the URL I can think of (anyone know why this is the case?), and it’s not really a surprise that I gave up in frustration a few times before randomly stumbling onto a comment mentioning the case sensitivity issue.

I suspect a lot of previous posters would still be posting if the initial account transfer process were smoother…

I moved 11 posts to a new topic: Email case sensitivity in Discourse

I’ve encountered unix packages that exploit case sensitivity in messy ways. For instance, TESTS might be a text file explaining how to use the files in ./tests. Or image.C might be a c++ implementation of the c library implemented in image.c.

I ended up here by accident and notice your comment is a little old, but just a note that Felton has always been moderating alongside Antinous… and I feel like I’m forgetting someone else too…

I think Antinous was just the most vocal. In all fairness his presence wasn’t due to moderation, in fact quite the opposite :stuck_out_tongue:
