charity’s a terrible replacement for taxation though. people who manage to extract huge amounts of wealth from the economy shouldn’t get to set policy while they’re alive let alone after they’re dead.
when people talk about not wanting to foster dependency on government it’s usually because they want to foster dependency on themselves, beholden to their worldview.
better to have that money moving through the economy now, lowering the barriers to other people having successful lives by allowing the government to cover child care, education, healthcare, public transportation, and infrastructure.
( i know im preaching to the choir. i just saw a couple of posts that mention the charity thing. if he’s so “nice” to give back “his” money via charity, he can step up to the plate and advocate for higher taxes instead. )
So you’re saying somebody took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor and said “all this I will give you if you will bow down and worship me” and apparently he did it?
You know buddy, if you’re worried about “attacks on the rich”, you should worry about poor people NOT getting money to help them survive. People who aint got nothing aint got nothing to lose.
90% of charity is complete bullshit. Some decent ones exist; usually they have a location where you can physically go and watch them give things of value to people, but most philanthropy is just a means of laundering money and reputations. I mean, just look around and then tell me charity is working.
I usually take note of the rather expensive cars in the parking lots; and at times; check the assessor’s office records to see where the employees live.
Charity can be very lucrative.
