Me: oh Dear Dog, not another racist incident in Michigan.

Also me: Mid-Michigan. Figures.

How the fuck is this not assault, potentially assault with a deadly weapon, by an adult upon a minor child? I know, she is Black and the adult is white, so, of course not! (Much pearl-clutching over impugning the reputation of the white folks involved, and “what did she do to cause this?”) :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: :face_vomiting:

there’s a follow up.

looks like they were riding – in the direction of traffic – downtown, go-proing themselves doing wheelies. so the cops decided to make an “example” of them.

they’re only allowed to ride on the sidewalk(!!!), they have to be wearing helmets, and they have to have their bikes licensed. and i’m sure the cops are pulling over white drivers every day and taking their cars away from them for not using a turn signal, right?

the worst is, maybe even worse than the arrest itself, is the way the cops use them getting their bikes back to basically force the kids to grovel and thank the cops.

if they are so worried about “dangerous biking” – they should use all that money they’re pouring into the police for something actually useful, like building freaking bike lanes and bike parks

“We have better things to do with our time.”

Okay, so why aren’t you doing them?

This is contrary to literally every single thing I’ve ever read about cycling on roads (despite the fact that the sidewalk is a comparably far safer place to be on a bike in like 99.9% of circumstances).

I mean, it totally makes sense that the police force would be more stringent about bicycle riding than, say ownership of semiautomatic machine guns.
For the public safety, right. /s
(We all know what this is really all about, right?)
ETA the PS, thank you, Gatto, for the added context.

In case you have not seen this, check out Black Earth Rising on Netflix, which gives a good look at how the French government bears some responsibility for what happened in 1994.

Michaela Coel and John Goodman are amazing in it…

I’ll second that: definitely worth watching.

I believe an anthropologist on here was talking about the dodgy history of the discipline. I find this horrifying, then I find the Move massacre to be utterly unfathomably evil anyway.

The institutions have held on to the heavily burned fragments, and since 2019 have been deploying them for teaching purposes without the permission of the deceased’s living parents.

everything about those murders is just horrible.

No one from the city government was criminally charged in the attack. The only surviving adult MOVE member, Ramona Africa, was charged and convicted on charges of riot and conspiracy; she served seven years in prison

at least with waco there was the theory that the davidians set the fires themselves, or that it was an accident due to the tear gas – the fbi didn’t deliberately bomb them, stall putting the fires out, and then shoot people who were trying to save themselves.
