The trend in book bans for 2020 is books dealing with racism and Black hsitory. 2018 and 2019 were books about LGBTQ+. The one about (and by) Ruby Bridges sounds good. Maybe a bit advanced for my kid but I’m going to go buy it anyway.

My kids’ high school library used to do a big exhibit every year to showcase the banned books and ran a casual contest to see who could read the most in that week.

I know that in Chicago, any injury or death that occurs once the police decide to chase and/or shoot at a suspect is labeled an additional crime by that suspect, especially when the suspect is ultimately killed and thus there is no case to go through the legal system. Poof! It’s like it never happened.

This makes me wonder about the sources of FBI data, and how accurate or inaccurate it is because of the same collection and reporting problems.

Come sit by me, then, because I’ve been wondering the exact same thing for quite a while now!

I see that these parents are also upset because police officers aren’t included, while fire fighters are still among Scholastic’s “Community Heroes.” If they don’t want their children exposed to any “controversial topic,” the school district should encourage them to try home schooling:

Can I be glad and really pissed off at the same time? I think so.

And the most important part is the last two paragraphs.

On Tuesday, Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney who represents the Floyd family, called on Abbott to “act swiftly” to approve the pardon but also to enact reforms to prevent what happened to Floyd from happening to other people of color.

“This drug charge … helped to unravel his life,” Crump said in a statement. “Similarly, tens of thousands of Black lives are ruined by a criminal justice system that uses the war on drugs to target Black people, force them into felony pleas, incarcerate them, take away their voting rights, and destroy their families.”

“Look, it’s hard to take time out of our busy day assaulting people and planting evidence to discipline somebody for wanting to run over civilians.”
