Black Lives Matter. Still

I knew a film professor who had parents complain about the class screening of Flashdance and the nudity therein. (I think they stopped by to visit the class personally during the screening.) He really hated the thought that his tenure could be threatened thanks to such a crappy film.

Itā€™s not even shocking anymore. ā€œNo milk for you!ā€

Excellent! The only two points I donā€™t fully agree with is a white supremacist army being the only army to beat the US army (North Vietnam might disagree there - as they are now just Vietnam, with them in charge, not our guy). And the total defection happening in 1964. Jimmy Carter carried most of the south in 1976, for example, and Clinton carried parts of the south (including GA, LA, and TN) in 1992. And the last governor we had who was a democrat was Zell Miller (though he was a blue dog to be sure, he was still a democrat), and thatā€™s within my lifetime, so well after 64.

I think it was Kevin Kruse maybe who talked about the much slower shift to the solid south for the GOP, not immediately after the civil rights act.

Other wise, thatā€™s a god damn excellent encapsulation of the events of reconstruction.

Even over at my old VL job, with a more traditional student body, it was never a problem. I had a couple of parents contact me over extended student illnesses, but that was about it.

Itā€™s 2019 and heā€™s the first African-American elected official to lie in state in the Capitol, which was first used in 1800.

Ok, letā€™s see. Shot in the back (of the head) while running away, shooting into a daycare center at a fleeing suspect, celebrating the taking of a young life. Yup, justified, of course .

Thought experiment: how would Malcolm X have responded to the idea of a state funeral for himself?

Wouldnā€™t that have depended on the nature of the state?

These things are always moving targets subject to history. Iā€™d like to think we can imagine a world where the things that oppress us and our brothers and sisters can be turned to better thingsā€¦ Maybe Iā€™m wrong?

Yup.

But that is one of the core schisms between radical and reformist movements: is the problem an America which fails to fulfil its promises, or is the problem America itself?

As a historian, I have no easy answers. Only my own frustration and anger to contribute. I never claimed to have anything other than that.

A Jim Crow law is probably going to decide an election in 2019ā€¦in Mississippi, of course:

Dear manger the correct response would be to tell the other snowflake of a customer to STFU or GTFO or both.

Easy decision. If a customer didnā€™t want to sit near black people, they could have sat way the fuck outside and ate from the dumpster.

Better yet, Dumpster Flambeā€¦
