Black Lives Matter. Still

Yes, because “uppity” is a term that people still use. In 20fucking20.

"Jace Colucci, a member of Westside High School’s basketball team, discovered the image shortly before his team’s game against rival Wyoming East High School last Friday, CNN reports. The 17-year-old, who is biracial, walked into the visitor’s locker room at Wyoming East to find a sketch of what appeared to be himself hanging from a noose.

Jace is reportedly the only non-white member of the team, and the drawing seemed to be labeled with the name “Jace,” next to it — leading the teenager to believe it was directed at him."

Sigh. Even before it went full-on Trumpistan, WV had serious racial issues. Much worse now.

“ During this year’s parade, a member of Froggy Carr, in the Wench Brigade, and another person, were accused of wearing blackface. Froggy Carr was later disqualified from the competition.

Kenney says more needs to be done.

“The future of the parade is in jeopardy if Mummers leadership does not make immediate changes to better control the parade and organize yourselves. To be specific: I will explore options such as hosting the City’s own New Year’s Day Parade or changing the City’s policies regarding informal cost forgiveness applicable to cultural parades,” said the mayor in the letter.”

“ “It is therefore critical that you take decisive steps to end this behavior for good. If you fail to make these necessary changes, the parade will forever be known for hatred and bigotry, not the hard-work, dedication and celebration that I once enjoyed as a participant,” the mayor added.”

I seriously hope he gets a good settlement from this discrimination case. But I am sure that there are people who feel he should be happy with an apology.

A mere sliver of a silver lining, in that Newsweek posted a photo of him wearing a blazer and tie, instead of a booking photo.

I think you’re missing the point. The secretary of Defense is already required to review the records of WWII, Korean and Vietnam era servicemembers to determine if racism prevented them from being awarded the medal of honor.
But no legal mechanism existed for WWI era service members. This bill aimed to rectify that.

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/116/hr2249

anyway, this provision made its way into the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, which was passed and signed.

That’s good to know… and I appreciate the information. But please re-read:

hecep:

not to mention, the denials in WWII.

The denials in WWII.

Denials were stopped back then by superiors of those who submitted names of candidates.

Not shocked this happened in metro Detroit. Even less shocked it happened in Livonia (so whiiiite).

Excellent story to illustrate that racism is absolutely not confined to the ‘deep south’. As a bookend to this story, one of the first craft brewers in Michigan, Founders, recently settled a lawsuit over a black employee at their Detroit (as in downtown) tap room who suffered a ridiculously racist work environment for over two years before suing. Founders has issued a nonpology and does not appear to be poised to make structural changes required to prevent such harassment in the future. A bit of a shame, as they have been around since '94 or '95 and have some reasonably decent beers. Then again, Michigan has an abundance of breweries, and they won’t be greatly missed when they ultimately get sued into non-existence.
