For those interested, the law preventing specifically the British Museum* from returning anything in it’s collection is the 1963 British Museum Act.
Of course this law could be changed, but I can already imagine the Daily Mail headlines this would provoke…
*and the Natural History Museum, which was part of the British Museum until this Act split them up.
