British Museum shocked as its stolen artifacts are stolen from it

There are three such obelisks. and Zahi Hawass has compalined about the condition of the american one. I gather his political fortunes have diminished since the coup.

seems that Ismail Pasha, then the ruler of Egypt, did not value them as much as he should.

For those interested, the law preventing specifically the British Museum* from returning anything in it’s collection is the 1963 British Museum Act.
Of course this law could be changed, but I can already imagine the Daily Mail headlines this would provoke…

*and the Natural History Museum, which was part of the British Museum until this Act split them up.
