Truer words were never spoken. The time I was invited to play CAH I found that the transgressive ‘naughty’ jokes landed well for a while, then the novelty wears off. But the ones that got the biggest laughs had surreal, absurdest punchlines (and dadaist non-punchlines). Also - drinking helps.
I’d agree that those rules apply to public free speech. But at home, with a group of friends where everyone knows each others limits (and how to safely push them a bit), I’d argue the same does not apply. Indulging in Taboos and breaking the acceptable norms of polite and decent speech is an important release valve.
Yes it’s a bit silly, but there is a catharsis in it. Acting the part of an asshole does not make you an asshole, so long as you do it in private, with people who will not be hurt and who share your humor. I look at Peter Cook and Dudley Moore’s Derek and Clive albums as being a fine example of this.
