Can you see the racism now?

You don’t get to play with me.

I guess if you’re from south of the Mason Dixon we’re all Yankees up here

I can understand the irritation from New Englanders. Perhaps to differentiate you could adopt the Southern pronunciation of “Yankee” for the fake Yankees and reserve the local pronunciation for only New Englanders. I believe you New Englanders put the emphasis on the “Yan” syllable, whereas in The South we pronounce it with emphasis on “Damn”.

Fans of the Urban Sector 16 Formalized Conflict Simulators experience the most exquisite of pride-affect sensations when Urban Sector 16 achieves numerically superior results in contest with Urban Sectors 7, 22, and especially those bastards over in 34. Assholes.

I propose that none of the teams are given a name except the champions at the end of the year. Then their province (or state or whatever) get to democratically choose what their name will be for the next season. They then get to play with a name for the entire season while everyone else is only referred to by the name of their locality. If the champions lose, they lose their name and identity, and the new champions get to pick a name.

TL;DR – You don’t get a name unless you win.

Clearly, we all know the placebo effect dictates skin color just like everything else.

I think every team should take on animal names. No SPECIFIC animal names. just generic ones. And no adjectives!

For example, the Screaming Eagles would just be “The Birds”. Charging Mustangs would just be The Horses.

Why? (Assuming you actually have a point…)

(shrugs). Seems to work okay in Oakland.

From what I recall of this debate, the Blackhawks get a lot less flack for a number of reasons, though people still tend not to be huge fans of the logo.

The biggest reason that those of native American heritage cited was the fact that Black Hawk was a specific person native to the region. The big complaint against “Redskins” is that it is a stereotyped, racist term from history that’s generally considered to be derogatory towards native american culture. Black Hawk was a respected figure in his time, so it feels less iffy and more respectful to name something after him.

Thank You! 'Bout time somebody stuck up for those of us subjected to regionalism.
I would propose we drop the ‘Yankee’ and replace with ‘Ignoramus’, but that would be a slap in the face to our ancestors who knew exactly who they were mad at, and erase the meaning of the phrase. So. Nope. Doesn’t work.

So, if Cleveland changes its logo and mascot, that will open the door for a 7-11 Indian as well as a casino Indian in an equal opportunity fashion? Gawd, I do love it when white people get all hot about racism!

But I guess the only proper thing would be to name a team ‘International Multiracial Politically Correct Homo erecti Pan-Cooperatives’. Or, ‘IMPCHePC’. Gooooo, team!

To steal from a Dawkins book, here are four squares of color taken off the foreheads of people in a photograph:

Look at which colors you might distinguish, then compare the photograph here and how those people are described. I think that should be enough to prove the point: the color of your skin is not a social construction, but what gets called “skin color” definitely is.

Edits: that image was hard to link to; put in normally with a period, the subsequent underscores get turned into em tags. Is the right to mention it to @codinghorror?

Yeah, being against injustice is stupid. Honkies ought to enjoy their goodies gratefully and STFU.

What if we just called them the “Washington Rednecks” and put a cowboy hat on the mascot instead of the feather? Seems like a reasonable compromise.

What about a “NY Kikes” hat? Or would you think it offensive if the DC football team were named the “Washington Niggers?”

Yep, I said it. For some reason that’s an example that never gets used, but it’s just the same to use Redskins.

As for the argument about the Fightin’ Irish/Celtics or even some groups like Jews thinking its fine as long as they are caricatured similarly, it’s just not the same; Caucasians and to a large extend Jews live in a relatively protected “post-racial” bubble compared to other minorities. It’s easy to say you’re not offended by “whitie” or “heeb” if you don’t associate that word with being actually discriminated against.

LOL. True dat!

I recommend blackpeopleloveus.com.

So, you’re saying that white people who speak up and act against racial injustice are the same as clueless white liberals who condescendingly glom onto black people so they can basically wear them like identity-affirming adornments?

If so, I beg to differ.

Eh, it would be closer to the Washington Negros I think. Both are insults that are somewhat archaic and only mouthbreathers use non-ironically anymore.

It’s hard for me to imagine someone using the word “Redskin” in an angry context without imagining them also dressed in an 19th century cavalry outfit. Unless of course they’re referring to the football team.

Seriously, picture someone who would say “God damn Redskins!” in your head that isn’t a football fan. It’s an obsolete insult.

Most people insensitive enough to use that term probably don’t check to see if the Asian person they are referring to is actually of Chinese ancestry.

Hey! I like sour kraut. Sometime it’s better than the sausage. Esp when it’s got lot’s of rye seeds in it.

I would totally wear one of those chinaman hats with a “fightin’ whities” baseball jersey.

Then I’d roar down the highway with the windows down, blasting out Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys.

Honestly, it’s just as bad either way the “kraut” is just impossible for the bigoted to single out. Historical and contemporary physical, social, and mental abuses aside the mindset remains the same and the idea of one slur being most racist is obnoxious. Anyone would want their slur to reach the sting of “kraut” or “mick” which used to be brutal depending on time and place, just easier to shed than physical distinction.
