Cargo ship carrying $400 million in Porsches, Lambos, and Bentleys is burning in the mid-Atlantic

I believe the shipping company is liable for the cargo while aboard ship. That cost gets passed to the insurer. But that is one big sack o’cash! And the company is still likely looking at some kind payment. A lot of butt-hurt to share.

It’s a $112 million loss according to the Guardian article. $400m is the retail price of the automobiles.
Also, it’s a glorious end for these cars.

Looks like it is dying down, which is good. It is running out of stuff to burn and not going to reach the ship’s fuel stores

I wonder if that would still be the case if it could somehow be proven that one of the electric cars spontaneously started the fire. Wouldn’t be the first time something like that happened.

Obligatory: this proves there are no Bentleys aboard, after all.

is it terribly wrong of me to inwardly wish - in fervent, if fantastical glee, that these
-ahem- automobiles were ultimately bound for delivery to Miami?
I ask this upon the observation that - in my life I have never before seen, amassed in one city/region, such a preponderance of ultra-luxury cars: lambos, bentleys, alphas, maseratis, ferraris, on down to porsches and teslas. out on the I95, I75, RR Turnpike, US 1, the everyday commute.
and of course, they all make it clear that they are not bound by the same rules of the road as I, in my simple Toyota Tundra, no!
entitled assholes, the lot o’ em.

Yeah, I was thinking, this could be a heck of an insurance scam.

What little I know about this is that marine cargo insurance is incredibly complicated. As I understand people who ship ocean freight usually have to hold their own insurance against shipping losses because carrier liability if often surprisingly limited.

I haven’t seen a basic Bentley in quite a while. The Bentleys around here (some sedans, lots of coupes, convertibles and SUVs) probably average $350K or so. The Lambos are probably in the same range with the Porsches about half that.
The 1% love Bentleys; they broadcast that they’re very rich but “aren’t RR snobs”. Rolls Royce sedans and SUVs are for the .1% to .01%, don’cha know. In that income bracket they don’t give a crap what anyone thinks.

A couple years ago I had a Bently that first wouldn’t let me merge. And then I got behind him and the road connected to the main highway. At one point we were parallel-ish and the dude tried to change lanes into me! You would think if you car costs more than nany people’s houses, you might pay fucking attention.

Thank you. I mean are we doing this again? Any car over $40K is a significant purchase for the majority of Americans. Once someone takes a loan on this amount they are saddled with an enormous monthly payment unless they have a large down payment. Either way, this is a significant amount of money for most Americans.

Some people still seem to think “1%” means Billionaires, whereas in reality anyone with a billion dollars is actually part of the 0.00003%.

Second thank you. That was the weirdest hill to die on that I have seen all year, and didn’t even know how to reply. Your GIF game was strong.
