The target market thinks celebrities are their friends.
Have you ever started talking to somebody in your neighborhood because you’re sure you remember them from somewhere? And then halfway into the second sentence you realize oh shit this is that guy from that music video. And then you apologize and walk away?
It is shrug-worthy, imo.
Now I doubt I’d have proudly told a disparaging+racist joke to random people and on camera when I was 15… but I’m not gonna label-someone-for-life for such a thing… and I bet most people wouldn’t either.
But I guess the Beiber camp was really worried about it and TMZ preyed on that fear.
As stated in the rest of my original reply comment; Upon actual release in the media, the vid made little impact. So it indeed ended up being shrug-worthy irl.
To be fair, Hamilton Nolan writes some good rants, and Cord Jefferson got his start at Gawker… and Gawker does host i09, which is an excellent genre blog.
