Because blackmail, carefully handled, can be made to look like an arrangement that is mutually beneficial. Then the money is more like a fee for certain services. Services that would have to be sourced elsewhere. Perhaps from someone not so discreet.
This was basically just another business deal for those creeps.

I think it’s worth discussing the massive potential utility of these publications as black propaganda. We already know they catch-and-kill stories for powerful allies. Is it a stretch to assume they’re capable of publishing a story with some grains of truth but enough missing and wrong to serve to discredit (not just their published version, but) the larger story in general?
