While I don’t think I’d ever heard Gatewood’s name before some of his pictures are familiar. They’re so striking and thought-provoking. His pictures are shot in black and white, but they’re anything but black and white.

I was first introduced to him through Modern Primitives too. Wonderful book (and book series – Ballard’s Atrocity Exhibition is another great one).
It’s kind of amazing how much has changed since then. What was, in the 80’s, fascinating and morbidly compelling has become the standard fare of your local independent coffee shop’s Baristas…
RE/Search Modern Primitives was a pivotal moment in my life. All of the recent celebrity deaths have been a loss and sad but this is a fucking gut punch.
