“China flight systems jammed by pig farm’s African swine fever defences”

So then it’s working…

Related: Here in TJ, we have street vendors who are selling laser pointers at major traffic intersections as Xmas toys. They turn them on and wave 'em around toward the sky as proof that they work, when we’re only a few miles from the Tijuana airport.

Gangs in China reportedly send drones to drop material infected with Swine Flu on pig farms. Then, the gangs buy the meat on the cheap and sell it to unwitting customers.

Given the otherwise fascinating, ruthless economic calculus behind its availability, these two sentences alone guarantee I will never again consume a “McRib.” Not that it was super likely up to now either.

A good argument for genetically modified flying interceptor pigs… provided they don’t get avian flu,

If this isn’t the cyberpunk future we were promised, I don’t know what is.

I was going to say “accidental cyberpunk,” but also it feels like a subplot from one of Cory’s novels.

See, if you just raised your pigs in horribly overcrowded indoor pens like in the US, you wouldn’t have this problem!

I love how the diagram specifies intestinal diarrhea. I’m not sure I want to know what other kinds there are.

GPS-jamming tech seems to be spreading in China. First the Sand Pirates, now this.

Have they considered eating the pig smuggling gangs?

That would both increase the supply of pork* and reduce the amount of sabotage.

*some pigs may be longer than others.

I was going to go with “the cyberpunk future we weren’t promised.” I feel like the promised future was less weird or at least less mundane than this - the Chinese gangs would have been going after cutting-edge biomedical implants or something; no one would have accepted this kind of tech arms race involving Chinese pig farmers and tainted pork.

Not that hard to jam GPS - but can be costly:

Too late, we’re doomed

African swine fever is not the same thing as swine flu. While African swine fever does not infect humans, swine influenza can–either sub-clinically, or as full blown zoonotic swine flu.

The South China Morning Post article makes no mention of flu or influenza.

After watching the film Contagion, I plan to be more careful about where I eat during my next trip to China. :worried:
