The City is just the public face of money laundering pipelines that go through the Crown Dependencies (like Jersey and the Isle of Mann) to the British Virgin Isles or Cayman Islands.
If the UK government decided to do something about money laundering, they could shutdown 80% of it without involving any other countries.
They won’t of course, because the right people are making money.

EU rules into financial transparency is part of the reason, one of the ones they didn’t say out loud (Russia also moves billions through the City).

I always assumed it was the one honest reason for brexiter Tories. Racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia was just bread and circuses for their poorer supporters.
