Harlan Crow must be devastated.

Billionaires giving “gifts” are the only kinds of friends I can imagine this miserable, bitter, weird guy having (except, perhaps, for his fellow dedicated porn aficionados).

I hope somebody’s looking into the other Supremes’ behavior, and not only focusing on Thomas.

He’s a gateway oligarch to the hard stuff.

eta: And if he’s upset, he can go sulk in his Nazi memorabilia room.

“Slow creep”? I’d say it’s more like warp 10.

what i find most alarming is that the SC has no one they need to answer to. absolute unchecked power in their own realm. congress? sure, they will respond to congress if they want to. ethics? sure, we’ll take care of that amongst ourselves. have another branch of government enact a rulebook to try to curtail corruption and influence peddling? oh no. no. no. no. must be the best fucking job in the world.

Really don’t know why more high school guidance counselors don’t recommend it more. :man_shrugging:

It’s supposed to support the idea of an independent judiciary. But without strong (or any) formal ethics rules the outcome is that creeps like Thomas and Alito do have someone to answer to: billionaires pushing an ideological agenda.

The Constitutional remedy for a corrupt SCOTUS justice is the same as the Constitutional remedy for a corrupt President: impeachment and removal by Congress.

So the problem is less that either office comes with “absolute unchecked power” so much as we have a political system that is so partisan that there is virtually no chance that the people who are supposed to act as a check on that power will actually do it.

Are they meeting in a Walmart parking lot? You know how much Clarence likes to hang with the little people.

Only outside his “modest” six-figure RV, purchased with the help of yet another wealthy “friend” (a former health insurance exec). Can’t have the plebes sullying the place.

I don’t get it, either. If a SCOTUS justice robbed a bank, they would be arrested and charged and prosecuted as a bank robber. Some of these examples have to run afoul of anti-bribery and anti-kickback laws regardless of who is doing them. Or at least violations of tax laws. Unreported income is tax fraud. How is Thomas not accountable for that?

i suspect because no one has been brave enough to look.

( and, of course, specifically with taxes – audits are generally aimed at the least wealthy because those are the simplest audits to preform )

They (Thomas, the other conservative judges, and the Kochs) meet in Berlin, by Lake Wannsee.
