Literally the only thing here that’s funny.

Calling the cops was against the express wishes of Columbia’s board, and this happened the day after she testified, so she had barely gotten back and there was no excuse of any illegal behavior at that point. The police actually talked to the protesters, which she hadn’t at that point.

American politicians, and politicians elsewhere, are perfectly well aware of this, and have never forgotten it.

Which is why for hundreds of years they have diligently worked to redefine anything which causes disruption or disorder as a “riot” or “public disturbance”, and a “peaceful protest” as basically sitting alone in your bedroom (after work or school, because strikes or go-slows are disruptive) thinking really hard about wanting better things.

So much this.

I read a review a few years ago about what actually changes things. IIRC, the authors said that petitions and demonstration marches achieve very little compared to actually disrupting business-as-usual.

This was part of why Gandhi’s peaceful protests worked; he didn’t just peacefully protest. When he led strikes, taught workers how to team up and harvest their own salt, etc, he was not just “protesting”. He was putting great big rocks in the path of business-as-usual.

ETA: and as you say - politicians have never forgotten this.

Writing in “Promises to Keep,” Biden recounted a conversation he’d had with The Washington Post’s PAUL TAYLOR about a memory from his time at law school. Biden, wearing a sports coat and on his way to get pizza, looked up at the administration building only to see people hanging out the windows of the chancellor’s office with SDS banners.

“They were taking over the building. And we looked up and said, ‘Look at those assholes.’ That’s how far apart from the antiwar movement I was,” Biden wrote. Taylor, Biden added, retold the story to the rest of the press corps, confused by it.
