Yeah, it feels weird to see the GDR considered communist. I guess it’s technically true on some level but I’ve never heard it before

The problem is that in English “socialism” can mean something like Denmark as well as Soviet satellite states like the GDR. Yes, technically even the USSR claimed it was only a socialist state that aimed to achieve true communism at some hazy future point, but it does make sense to distinguish that from the Scandinavian model.
