The girl from Ipanema will be locked up at home in February.

She is running out of options. Many cities are canceling or postponing Carnaval.

This must not have been an easy decision. It is such a very popular festival, creates a lot of jobs and makes some big money. After a year of economic crisis, giving up tourism money must have been difficult.

The São Paulo Carnival has been postponed, but Mr. Bruno Covas, the mayor, has not yet set a new date. Street party organizers are upset, as they say Mr. Covas didn®t hear their suggestions and requests. The article also states that the popular festival has already been postponed on two occasions, but the revelers solemnly ignored the authorities’ orders.

Salvador, another city where the carnival celebration attracts a crowd of tourists, will also postpone the party. However, city officials still have no idea when people will be able to take to the streets and dance all day long.

The reason why a national health authority needs to be in charge of managing a pandemic is for situations like these. 1. Florida is not a closed population. If the virus runs rampant there, it will spread all over the country, even if we get it under control elsewhere. 2. More infections = more mutations, generating a high risk of strains that are less affected (or unaffected) by the vaccines we started in Jan-Feb based on the original strain. Also a reason why policy needs to be science-based rather than magical-thinking-based.
