Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 1)

Wow. Just wow. I mentioned earlier (like eons ago it seems) that this beast does things I have not previously seen. It is a long standing theory of the origin of type 1 diabetes that a viral infection can trigger the autoantibodies that destroy islet cells, but I have not previously seen a link to a specific virus. Given that somewhere around 15-25% of “common colds” are caused by other coronaviruses, one begins to wonder if that is a characteristic of the family? We are going to learn boatloads about viral functions and workings from the research effort poured into this pandemic. Sucks that it took this to focus our attention, though.

And at the other end of the scale, the last case in ICU in Vietnam has recovered:

I’ve toyed with the idea of putting a lavalier mic in my half face respirator, using my phone as a voicebox. Don’t have any small transmitters or a good way to get the wire out, though.

I mean, if we’re gonna live in these things, might as well make the best of it.

Wow! That is unheard of, esp since anything encoutaging voter participation is effectively a Democratic campaign ad!

Perhaps they could add a speech to text display on the front? Masks are hard on the hearing-impaired, who depend on lip-reading to fill in the gaps.

Mind you, a phone app could do that job…

The government [is] extremely fond of amassing great quantities of statistics. These are raised to the nth degree, the cube roots are extracted, and the results are arranged into elaborate and impressive displays. What must be kept ever in mind, however, is that in every case, the figures are first put down by a village watchman, and he puts down anything he damn well pleases.

I guess there’s some sense where these are similar; for instance we all know that “encouraging participation” = “getting out the Democratic vote”. But “Oh, Alas, Partisanship!” headlines really rankle me. Partisanship is about people disagreeing with each other. That’s democracy! This is people disagreeing with reality, and the only people involved are the Republican Party.

Or as a blanket description of a turmp administration.
