Count to ten thousand! (Part 1)

On 3 July 1844 the last known breeding pair of great auks is killed.

(For some reason not as famous as the dodo. I blame Carroll. And the cuteness.)

In 1845 the French psychiatrist Dr. Jacques-Joseph Moreau publishes the book Du hachisch et de l’aliénation mentale, études psychologiques, the first book about a drug published by a scientist.

Moreau was a member of the “Club des Hashischins” (Club of the Hashish-Eaters), other notable* members were Honoré de Balzac and Victor Hugo.

Not enough astronomical features.

RX J1856.5-3754 is a neutron star in the constellation Corona Australis.

I like the title of this paper: RX J1856.5-3754: Bare Quark Star or Naked Neutron Star?

Bare? Naked? Astronomers are a dirty dirty pack : )

Casual racism?
Are you quite sure?

Recall that this was Falmouth County in 1843, where the “negroes” were likely all slaves, and the end of the world would mean liberation.

There’s and interesting counter cultural style developing in England at this time. They might be the Imperial Conquerors overseas, but at home they are getting liberal and free thinking and interesting.
