French military aircrews, at least in earlier years, got a small bottle of red wine in their in-flight meals. We would look down at our squashed ham and cheese on white with coke and some chips and feel like a lot was missing.

The pre-print version of the paper A spectral synthesis code for rapid modelling of supernovae has not only a PDF size of 1874 kb but also SO MUCH WIN!

  • Supernovæ, the ae ligature is extremly æsthetic
  • The abstract begins with “We present TARDIS - an open-source code for rapid spectral modelling of
    supernovae (SNe).”
  • The Google image search for Tardis AND Supernova (seriously, click the link!)
  • My chance to pester you with more astronomy-related images, this one shows the remains of SN 1987A

RFC 1882, another humorous internet standard in the form of an advent calendar.

On the third day of Christmas, technology gave to me:    Three French users (who, of course, think they know everything)    Two transceiver failures (which are now spewing packets all over the net)    And a database with a broken b-tree (Backup? What backup?)

My spouse and I have visited Chattanooga twice in the last year and failed to eat at this place twice due to coincidences of timing.

(St. Elmo is at the bottom of the Incline Railway up Lookout Mountain.)

Wandered in to Chattanooga a few years back on a long motorcycle roam through the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast states to find that B.B. King was playing downtown that night. I had just enough time to shower and grab a beer and a burger before the show started.

Epic. Night.
