This is exactly what one would expect from Musk specifically, but in a more general sense I really wish we didn’t live in a world where humanity seems to have collectively decided to just give up on actually inventing cool future tech and instead simply pretend that we’re already there

That’s really only an issue in consumer-facing big tech companies. There’s still tons of innovation in real industry, you just haven’t heard about it. But, yeah it is frustrating: “If we just call our new autocorrect bot “AI” and sell it to everyone as such, a surprising amount of people will actually believe it is sentient, or at least useful!”

Will this august chamber of justice smile similarly on me paying the $8k for “full self driving” with a check for $80, in an act of consumer puffery?

I’ve heard that driving tests in the US are pretty lax compared to Europe, and that’s part of why the US has such a high road traffic accident rate. Maybe Tesla auto-drive looks good in comparison, even if it can’t pass the human test.
