the most hilarious thing about gamer&gate is that it was all made up by 4chan AND OPENLY PLANNED AND HASHED OUT ON A PUBLIC IRC SERVER WHERE ANYONE WHO KNEW WHERE TO LOOK COULD SEE. Zoe Quinn was easily able to lurk there under a pseudonym and get some very nice chat logs.
And on the Gamer issue, the ever-excellent John Walker/RPS.
it seems to me that the the media were real @ssholes in all of this. They shamelessly profiteered off of this event. they are the ones who took it from relative obscurity to a 250 million viewer media circus. 99.9% of people found out about it from the same type of news story that went something like ā[fake outrage] at what you can find right here at [this website we are providing you with the address of]ā¦ā (*)-cue laughing male news anchor who obviously viewed and enjoyed the pictures and a female news anchor who reminds us that the exposed celebs should be feeling shame about their nudity-
reallyā¦this kind of behavior is the result of the repressed puritanical fāed upness around the human body and nudity and sexuality. it is sad that anyone has to feel shame about their nakedness, ever, and that this kind of repression leads to some pretty messed up misogynistic behaviors and ways of thinking and acting.
For those interested, the story as I told it before: How an infuriated mom chased revenge-porn slime-king Hunter Moore offline
If a person provides the car trunk for people to put in and sell stolen merchandise, that person is, in fact, engaged in illegal behavior, is he not? Even if heās not doing the actual selling ā heās promoting and helping others do the actual selling, and giving them the space to do it in.
Huge props to reddit (and the channery, ftm) for taking such quick, decisive, ethically-principled action on this topic.
/mega-sarcasm
See, this quote is where you should have stopped. If you have to caveat what you are about to say because you āmight get bannedā, THEN DONāT FUCKING SAY IT. āWhat about the MENZā is as tiresome as it is pathetic.
Make your own damn thread about the fucking scourge of Neo-Nazis on Reddit. This thread is about the celebrity nudes. Itās not always about you.
Also of note, he did, in fact, get banned.
Ha! Well, there you go.
I guess pooping in threads about women in video games didnāt help him either.
I really donāt understand the little motor that gets people to go past a boundary so explicitly for so little gain. When I was a redditor I never went on /r/conservative or /r/menzenrite to bait the kind of people I dislike. I donāt go on motorcycle or hot rod forums and complain about loud pipes. I never went to Romney meetings to smear feces on the cars in the parking lot (merely contemplated it as a fictional exercise). Why would someone go on bbsbbn to complain about feminism, especially in a way that so often derided feminism as a valid topic?
I frequently got the feeling that Shane was nearly there, that he had conceded nearly every point except the point that it wasnāt all about his personal hobbyhorse, the rejection and isolation he feels as a Euro man. I have hobbyhorses too, and sometimes that includes the rejection and isolation I feel as a Euro man, but thereās a good reason why the MRA formulation of these concerns is derided: itās a terrible formulation of those concerns. MR creates a framework for organizing the world formed from naive false equivalence which requires an acceptance of a substantial paranoid delusion to become coherent as a persecution complex. Itās an attempt to appropriate someone elseās burden as oneās own personal martyrdom.
I think The Guardian have actually published more articles on this than there are photographsā¦
Just like our Reddit-William-Wallace-wannabe from the article. He looks past the gross and illegal violation of privacy to how it affects him. The level of self-absorbtion is amazing!
Heās not selling the information (to my knowledge - I actually mostly despise reddit) and, as I pointed out in my other comment, the material is hard to define as stolen, since they are copies. The person who first took the data broke a litany of laws under the CFAA but once those images were posted online you (the end viewer) are now accessing copies of them through system you do have authority to access. Yes, itās legalistic bullshit, but definitions matter.
Is it illegal material (apart from the pic of one celebrity who was apparently under 18 when the pic was taken)?
Seems excessive:
ā¦and this is coming from someone who has spent hours vitriolicly arguing with the guy over poorly rationalised gun rights arguments.
Itās funny how quickly you pivot from āIām not talking kiddie pr0n, that shit is vile and I would personally bash to death anyone who makes or distributes it,ā to saying that āapparentlyā someone was āunder 18 when the pic was taken.ā Thatās an interesting stand: apparently itās OK for reddit, redditors, and torrenters of the files to distribute an image that publicly sexualizes an underage girl because we canāt conclusively say she was under 18?
But to get to your main point, the images are stolen, and everyone knows they were stolen. If this were personal property, we would criminalize it as the possession of stolen goods. Since they are not personal property but intellectual property, we would criminalize it through the copyright system. And the unauthorized distribution and possession of these images (which is to say their digital copies) is illegal under copyright law.
You can call it victim blaming, but Iām just being a realist. Itās a noble goal to make a statement about what society deems appropriate, and itās a nice idea but it doesnāt work because you presume that everyone out there is responsible. Theyāre not.
Shame the bastards that keep copies and think itās A-OK to share?
OKā¦ how are you going to do that when you can already get them as a big fat torrent, all neatly organised in folder by celebrity? These are pictures of bewbsā¦ people in countries with jail terms for possession of pr0n download pr0n all the time.
Prosecute the people who hacked the accounts to start with?
Iād support that. The challenge is that people who do these things are usually pretty good at covering their tracks.
Pressure online storage suppliers to have better fucking security?
Apple did nothing wrong in this case (to my knowledge) except not insist that people use 2 factor auth. That was a usability decision that is theirs to make. They provide 2 factor for those who want it.
I nominate āIām just being a realistā to join the gallery of Instant Asshole Status Identifiers, along with āIām just playing devilās advocateā and āIām not racist, butā¦ā
Thatās not what Iāve said, youāre mistaken. Any publication of under age material is deplorable and, just so you know, some torrents claim that they DONāT include said image(s). I wouldnāt know because I havenāt looked.
the unauthorized distribution and possession of these images (which is to say their digital copies) is illegal under copyright law.
True. The copyright holder is within their rights to pursue this.
Show me where I have made a mistaken understanding of the world as it exists. I am explaining the situation, not defending those involved in every aspect of this story.
