Helena Meirelles, brazilian guitar player.

The history of the violeira is well known. Self-taught, she played in brothels in Mato Grosso do Sul for many years. The recognition of the general public only occurred when she reached the age of 70. From 1994, she recorded four albums, toured Brazil promoting a song with a strong influence of Pantanal and Paraguayan culture.

Miles Davis beaten by police and arrested during a cigarette break between sets outside the club he was performing at.

For those don’t know the history, on August 25, 1959, eight days after the release of his “Kind of Blue" album, Miles was performing at Birdland, recording an Armed Forces Day broadcast for Voice of America. In between sets he escorted a friend out and put her in a cab, then had a smoke in front on the club. A cop approached and asked him to move on. Miles pointed to the marquee, explaining that he was performing inside and that it was his name on the marquee. Still the cop persisted, not caring who Miles was or what he was doing. While Miles was trying to explain the cop’s mistake, a detective, drawn by the crowd that was starting gather, blindsided him in the head a few times with a billy club, drawing blood. He was then arrested and taken into custody. After going to the hospital to get his head stitched up, he was charged with felonious assault on an officer.

Same story as George Floyd, really. If you’re a black man who fails to express complete obedience to a cop, you’ll be abused, and then charged with being the abuser.

May I present Nightwish the acoustic version (or at least 1/3 of Nightwish, but it is an acoustic arrangement, so…) with a piece appropriate to our current world.

How’s the heart
Underneath the silence?
How’s the one
Drowning in the mire?
Let us sound a human paean
Come in, the fire’s warm
Burn the rope and dance some more

Interesting note: Troy Donockley, the guy on guitar, is not the guitar player in the band. He actually plays pipes and folk instruments. But passable fair on acoustic guitar as well. Who knew?

Some days, you need some classic REM videos, filmed in rural parts of your state:

It’s hard not to love Paradise Gardens and Howard Finster… And I bet you that the performance footage is from the 40 Watt.

Also, it’s disappointing that Rockville isn’t Rockdale (a county nearby to Athens)…

And just cause it’s a great song (clearly, not filmed in rural parts of my state)…

[ETA] Also, this song always brings me joy…

Who doesn’t love Kate Pierson!

And being stuck in traffic in Texas…

Oh! No, I keep forgetting to get that.

I am reading a history of soccer right now called The Ball is Round, which is a tome (about 900 pages or so). We need to renew our B&N card this month, so I’ll buy it or order it then… Thanks for the reminder!
