Celentano is not primarily a comedian. By the way, while Carra is a fantastic singer that is not her singing in the video, it is Claudia Mori, his wife. Carra is just doing the dancing.

Here’s Carra’s biggest hit (the version that made the charts in the UK and US is not as good):

(ETA: I changed the video, that wasn’t the original either.)

Me too! I got to see her live in the early 90’s. Easily the best concert I’ve ever seen. I miss her.

If you love old-school (50s and 60s) Italian pop, you absolutely must listen to Mike Patton’s full-length covers album, Mondo Cane:

[cued to track 7, ‘Scalinatella’]

Fun trivia, courtesy of Wikipedia:

• This particular song is in Neapolitan. Patton, being fluent in Italian, received a lot of informal coaching from the conductor, who grew up in Naples.

• The album reached #2 on the Billboard Classical Albums chart because Patton is just that awesome.

Youtube used to be full of fantastic clips from the show Canzonissima, but they’ve mainly been taken down on orders from Rai.

I grew up in a neighborhood comprised mainly by southern Italian immigrants, and I grew up in street fights with their kids, so I have to confess to not being generally fond of anything from the region. That said, if you can find this movie, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Lucky you; seriously.

Been picking up some odd stuff to chop and sample and have been inspired by Mrs. Evra Miller.
There’s just something about a voice that really doesn’t give a fuck about, well, anything other than singing. Key, timing, intonation and all those things are mere distractions.

Anyway.

That actually made me queasy enough that I had to stop it halfway through. I take it this is some cultural phenomenon I managed to miss in my 60 years on the planet.

It’s one of her better ones. Check out “A Hard Day’s Night” linked in my profile.

I’m fond of what can best be described as “outsider” music and art. There’s something about it that’s very encouraging. And it provides great material for messing with.

Mrs. Miller is a national treasure of high weirdness!

Then you may not care to listen to her fellow (and better-known) alliterative 1960’s sensation, Tiny Tim.

No, I know Tiny Tim very well. I don’t find his falsetto the sweetest thing in the world, but it never made me literally nauseous. (I wasn’t making a value judgment on Miller’s music, but reporting a physical phenomenon.)

It’s part of what makes her so interesting. Isolated, her voice isn’t actually too bad. Excessive coloratura maybe, but I’ve heard worse. But the way it wanders all over the place, never going completely off the rails but just enough to plunge deeply into the uncanny valley of musical ability… it’s just glorious.

I must confess that I was not hip, until Jinkx Monsoon slayed the fuck out of a LSFYL to this song on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

But once I was, I was instantly hooked.

I don’t agree with that vote at all!
