IMO it’s a miracle if you can get a car’s worth of crap, bolt it all together and bounce on down the road for 100,000km and shit doesn’t rattle or squeak… My 2003 Lancer (Mirage in the US) is amazing like that. Not like my 1984 Exa (Pulsar NX) at all - both of em close to 1000kg.

Yes, and the “everyone wanting to travel at the same time” is why carsharing, while being a good thing, is only going to get us so far on the way to a more sustainable society. To solve the problem of rush hours, you also need enjoyable & reliable public transport, a decent cycling infrastructure, and more teleworking.

Likewise, self-driving cars won’t solve the main issues with traffic either. It’s still a car, i.e., a space- and resource-hogging appliance.
