Dishing on your previous boss is never a good thing for a hiring boss to find on your C.V., because he or she will be mentally tabulating all the shady stuff they keep hidden, trying to figure out if you might rat them out in the future, too
So in other words, I can avoid working for shitty people in the future by dishing on shitty people now? That sounds like a great way to find a proper cultural fit with a company.
The practice at the Gizmodo sites of not allowing new commenters in until they had given enough verbal blowjobs was enough to drive me away almost completely. I still read the Nice Price or Crack Pipe on Jalopnik and used to read Why Your Team Sucks on Deadspin, but I can’t think of any other reason to go there.
So my reaction to their being taken over by an asshole is pretty much a 64-oz cup of “meh”.
If anything, failing to signal opposition to the management of G/O Media might be a bad idea. It all depends on your career track, who you want to work for.
Then I doubly admire these folks for their honesty. Nice to see someone not letting self interest and fear make them work to maintain a shitty status quo with their silence.
Well, I might have more admiration if they weren’t complaining as if they didn’t expect the consequences. When old time union type walked the line and got their head busted, they expected it and had a plan to deal with it.
Depends who you call your boss.
They both specifically mention how much they respect their editor (who is the person that would have hired them), and in any future job, it’s probably the editor who’ll be making the decision about hiring them.
The herb that they are insulting is the guy who owns the company.
Personally I don’t refer to that person in my job as my boss (sometimes “my boss’s boss”). The third time I met him I had to ask who he was because I didn’t recognise him.
I love both Gita and Tim for very different reasons, which is why that period of time when they collaborated on a weekly video for Kotaku was truly magical - their energies complemented each other in such a weird and wonderful way.
I’m so pumped that she’s going to continue to write at Motherboard, and EVEN MORE EXCITINGLY is joining Waypoint Radio, Vice Gaming’s regular podcast, and the best gaming podcast going right now!
They’ve also destroyed the functionality of the commenting system - which was always a decent portion of the reason for visiting. It’s gone from a daily visit for me and active commenting to a weekly checkin and deletion of my kinja commenting account.
Cory, I saw what you did there. You got us to click on an article because we felt outrage at a terrible boss, and expected to read thoughtful but salacious critique of “late stage capitalism.” We got the thoughtful critique, but along the way we also got deep conversation about the video game world, race, class and gender in that world, and some exposure to two cool writers. Well played Cory. Thank you.
well unless the person entertaining hiring them in their new job search is a souless asshat like they just left. but I don’t even think they’d get called in for a face to face right?
