Desperate John Deere tractor owners are downloading illegal Ukrainian firmware hacks to get the crops in

Surely this should be farmware, not firmware. Amirite? AMIRITE?!

Sadly I totalled the '63 Karmann Ghia. Damn the single chamber master cylinder! Always retrofit a dual in a restoration. And also, if you are ever approaching stationary obstacles at highway speed in a vehicle with no brakes, airbags or crumple zones, be aware that hysterical strength can cause the cables of an emergency hand brake to snap like guitar strings.

Heh, there’s a video that went up on facebook last week that includes a cameo appearance by my '67 Ghia. People were like “ohay are you in this ancient black and white movie that went up” so I looked and no, I’m not in it… but my car is!

I digress. Anyway, as you point out, it’s not the electronics that really make the big difference in vehicle fuel efficiency, it’s weight - and tractors need to be heavy. It’s important to their function.

Fair cop, I’ll bow to that!

I will mourn the death of your Ghia with you. Glad you survived.

I live in the Swedish -heartland if you will. Out here it is perfectly normal to fix ones own cars, tractors etc. Sweden doesn’t have a DMCA barring such things so hacking the electronics is normal and these days necessary. And to my knowledge, an EULA isn’t a legally binding contract unless you print it, sign it, witness it and send it to the manufacturer. Bush mechanics abound and nowadays many teach themselves electronics and hacking skills. My nephew whose a car mechanic has branched out to iphone repairs due to popular demand for example.
