Drivers who dislike cyclists don't see them

I’ve mentioned it before here in the forums on other threads, but a friend from Vegas would routinely get either run off the road or have people actually try to hit her with their cars. More often than not it was people in trucks. She got hit once or twice and got thrown off her bike a few times too trying to avoid getting hit. This happened to her in both a bike and on a scooter. People are assholes.

Also my particular experience with BMWs is that they are bad at parking their car within the lines. Sometimes i see them speeding like maniacs but that’s been quite rare, no more often than other makes and models.

Almost as bad…when various missiles are launched from cars or trucks. I was hit by a tamale once in Austin.

I’ve had people throw stuff at me before when walking or on a bike. They have always missed, but once someone threw a glass bottle at me and missed. Same friend that has gotten run off the road has had worse luck with that and i think she got hit with a drink once or twice :\

Caught an orange in the back of the head while riding a bicycle at 1am, and a flying mattress in the shoulder on a motorcycle.

At least the mattress wasn’t intentional; fell off a carelessly packed truck.

As both a pedestrian and driver, I see so many assholes, on both sides. Bike riders who won’t use the marked bike lanes and deliberately interfere with traffic and car drivers who don’t look before turning across a bike lane and crosswalk are the most popular around here.

The only type of cyclists that I ever tangle with are the ones that pass me on the right, then “take the lane”. …And the stop sign/light runners. Both of these concepts I agree with (taking the lane and rolling stops), but these can be abused.

While this is undoubtedly true, I sometimes will not “see” bikes approaching from a cross street in a residential intersection, while I always easily notice them if they’re traveling in my lane going the same direction. I believe some folks truly do not see bikes on occasion, but it does help when the story avoids fines or jail time.

Do you remember to take into account which “side” is armored?

Yes, because I am more often the pedestrian than the one in the vehicle.
And yes, because my brother was hit by a car at age 10 while riding his bike. He wasn’t paying attention, and just followed me across the street without looking for traffic. He survived intact, the driver was traumatized more (a family friend, as if turned out!)

It was more of a yes, which, than a yes, why? Thank you for your explanation, maybe my clarifying question is also worth such a response? Your brother must have felt awful to be treated that way.

To clarify: I was asking really just if you noticed that, and accounted for it - or if everyone involved had the exact same level of responsibility for their behavior when assholes collide? Third door options totally welcome, no false dichotomy, no “rhetoric”, just out of other guesses.

I’ve come close to being hit while on a bike about eight times.

Twice with cars. The others with other bikes.

About four of those incidents (and only one of the car ones) would have resulted in injury/death if I hadn’t avoided the collision. Once you pass the negligence threshold where you are endangering someone, “armouring” is just extra.

Furthermore: I took a bus across town the other night, and the bus driver was having to very deliberately not hit cyclists who weren’t following the yield laws for public transit vehicles. The cyclists would’ve been the ones in trouble if the bus had hit them, but the “fuck you” attitude of breaking the law and holding up a bus load of people was what was putting them in danger.

Sounds like they’re extra bad when it’s them AND they have something coming? Hard to tell what you mean. You were inconvenienced? That’s awful. You have my sympathy.

See, we have these ‘rules’ and ‘laws’. I break rules. Other people break laws, you follow? Same as any of you. :wink:

So we have what cars and bikes are supposed to do, and then we have the case of what they actually do.

Here’s a thing about people. This is what we do:

The rules need to be able to accomodate us, and our rights, but also never move an inch to help with our righteousness.
