Drone saves two teenagers stuggling in ocean by dropping yellow raft

Drowning people often don’t look to bystanders like they’re drowning.

Give me a minute, I’m pretty sure this was in an old BB post…

Thank you. Google pointed me at the BB post, but I couldn’t get to it.

For those who tl;dr — because it’s worth knowing:

  1. Drowning people are not able to call for help, because they’re trying to breathe.
  2. Their mouths aren’t clear of the water long enough for them to inhale and exhale.
  3. Instinct keeps their arms flat, pressing down on the water.
  4. They have no voluntary control over their arms.
  5. Their bodies remain upright in the water.

Notice that they can be in distress, with shouting and waving before they start drowning, but they may transition to drowning before noticing that they’re distressed, or be distressed and exhausted, unable to signal, in which case drowning probably isn’t far away at all.

Figuring out if someone is really drowning can wait until after they’re rescued.

Look, nobody said they were struggling. They were stuggling which is a perfectly cromulent word, or certainly should be.

I would think the fact that they immediately grabbed the float and used it to get to shore would indicate that they were in need of help (and probably very glad to have it)

Not having seen the video yet I can’t really comment but I’m going to anyway because this is the internet  -

This is Australia we’re talking about. Their advice for getting a lifeguard’s attention is basically to give them a languid wave of the arm, before (calmly!) sinking under the waves (or getting eaten by a shark/crocodile, stung by a deadly jellyfish or whatever).

The government/parents/churches really need to crack down on this scourge of stuggling that is sweeping the nation.

Our kids are going to stuggling parties - now they’re even doing it in the ocean!

How many years head start have they had with the killing?

and are fantastic at laying tile.

Thank God the floatation device was yellow - it doesn’t bear thinking about how this would have played out with a blue one.

That being said, this is actually a very good use case indeed.

I am disappoint.

Seeing the wave that crashed over them right after they grabbed the float, I think even a strong swimmer would have been in difficulty.
