Lear is a true national treasure. Few others have been able to harness popular culture to preserve and elevate (and, in Maude, self-criticise) the highest values of American liberalism. It’s arguable that without his TV work and without his advocacy organisation People for the American Way serving as bulwarks, the Christo-fascist agenda might be even further advanced today than it already is.

I didn’t realize he’s still alive at age 100.
