absolutely. your’s is even the standard framing. i think it’s just closer to the truth to say that the north was fighting for the south, while white southerners were fighting for the expansion of enslavement.
one thing i don’t know is why so many confederate politicians were pardoned and allowed to take up in the us ( and state ) government again, while some - like the two you mention - weren’t.
I’m ready to get him reelected. He’s a huge embarrassment for his party; it’s not like he’ll have much other power. Lets get people in there that aren’t worth bribing.
The goal shouldn’t be “let’s help the Republican Party be their worst selves.” Especially when the party is perfectly capable of doing that on their own.
The goal should be “let’s help make sure the best and most qualified candidates are the ones that win elected office.”
The Dem campaign must have been terrible not to pick these things up. I don’t see how a more effective, less embarrassing Republican in that slot will result in better governance.
The NY Dem party is a joke, as are many of the candidates it supports. The solution isn’t to leave that in place in the hope that it will allow more embarrassing GOP candidates to run.
Since the NY GOP is apparently as incompetent in vetting its own candidates as the state Dems are at doing oppo research, perhaps we can just let them continue making more Santos own-goals and instead focus on upping our own game. Maybe real competition will convince the GOP to stop running MAGAt clowns.
The system works best when both parties put their best candidates on the ballot. The last several years are a case study in what happens when one party goes from merely “malicious” to “malicious but also batshit insane enough to burn down the whole freaking country out of spite.”
Like @Melizmatic says, this ain’t no fucking game.
