This reminds me of an idea that I had for how role playing games get it wrong: you only get experience points if you beat the monster, get the gold, or otherwise succeed. I thought it would make more sense to get XP if you try and fail, as per the old adage that we learn more from our failures than our mistakes. An adage that some studies suggest has a kernel of truth in it, by the way.
Why do I bring this up? Well, because all games, even nerdy role playing games, by only rewarding success, build inhibitions. Yoda was wrong. With his “do or do not, there is no try”, things become daunting and discouraging.
Good points. That gives me some ideas. Thank you.
