They know a lot of users are right-wingers. They know that the vast preponderance of abuse is right-wing belligerents railing on the Other (it’s just what they do). They know that their user growth has flattened. They started out with the liberal ideal of being a “bastion of free speech,” where free speech was defined as any interaction other than physical threats and doxxing. They’re an open platform where all users are able to interact with each other. It’s a paradise for right-wing belligerents to besiege their enemies and engage in Holy Wars to drive away and silence the Social Justice Warriors on behalf of sacred Free Speech. It’s complete lunacy.
I really think at this point they really have no idea how to cope with the sheer volume of abuse they accidentally enabled by their design and principles, and probably don’t even have the resources to be able to manage it. They decapitate occasional egregious abusers, but how are you really going to shut down trollies in a platform optimized for driving trollies? On top of that there’s the issue of growth, where if they punted the bad actors, there’d be a likely exodus that would be bad for their bottom line. No idea what could really fix it, though they should at least be making more clear signs that they’re trying to do something more.
I think for future growth they’d be better off just mass punting the neo-Nazis/racists/misogynists/alt-right brigades, taking the hit, and making the platform something normal people would be less horrified by. When you see Jewish reporters being swarmed by alt-right scum with Auschwitz photos, black people being targeted with hideously racist garbage (with double-whammys for black women), etc. it doesn’t really look like a place any sane person would want to hang out.
The problem is that it’s also quite a fun place to hang out so long as you don’t bump into the Nazi freaks. I’ve got a long block list, not that it helps when it’s like swatting flies in a stockyard.
