Great, now I’m imagining the old American Online mail notification voice cheerfully announcing “You’ve got Cancer!”
cut down the number of false-negative diagnoses by 70%
Well, that’s extremely useful. Having cases fall through the cracks until they’re more advanced isn’t great for survivability, so this seems like a significant benefit.
Right up until it misses an Aunt Minnie.
It’s good to see this research surfacing again. Back in the 90s, there was a great hoopla made about an expert system that could more reliably diagnose a heart attack from given symptoms than a doctor, but it was just a flash in the pan, probably folded into the many current AI development efforts which seem to be making more or less the same claim. I do wonder if the AMA and other gatekeepers who keep the number of MDs down to where it is maximally profitable are going to see this as a good thing, as it makes their members lives easier, or a bad thing as it intrudes upon the Doctor’s privelege of diagnosis.
