don’t many vaccines wane over time? maybe this does as well…
Vaccine effectiveness wanes over time primarily due to changes in the viral target as it mutates. Fentanyl’s chemical structure doesn’t change over time.
For whatever it’s worth, I don’t see these ever becoming a routine childhood vaccine or anything. Opioids make surgery (or, more accurately, recovery) possible and to make them universally ineffective is no one’s goal. But for folks fighting addiction, these could be a godsend. I am very encouraged.
that was never my understanding with things like tdap, or even smallpox. yes, totally for flu and coronavirus - because those mutate so quickly. but for others, my understanding was our immune system needs reminders from time to time.
That’s the remainder after “primarily” - and why those vaccines have protection that lasts for decades, not just months like the flu.
totes. but primarily does a lot of work in this context. even assuming this works on people, waning immunity might still allow them access to pain meds later in life. ( and, if it does work, they’re much more likely to get to later in life if they’re able to kick something like fentanyl )
Unfortunately, even mild recreational use of opioids with subsequent rehabilitation still means that their likelihood of a date with the Cath Lab increases and is more likely to be sooner rather than later.
