At first I thought this was a new version of the old myth about Dragon Quest:

tl;dr Dragon Quest was so popular that instances of truancy and sick leave could be counted on to be increased on the release day for a new entry for the series. The myth goes that it was such a big deal that a law was passed that forced all future releases of the game to be on weekends. The fact is no such law was passed, but the publishers did voluntarily move the release days to weekends because of the issue.
