What hit me was how much it reminded me of the score from Forbidden Planet. Until the comment from @Seamo , I never knew that this sort of sound production process was called a “Krell Patch”.

I don’t think that it makes any difference what he hooks up to that synth.

Yeah, if anything it’s a source of noise only, and probably not much of one at that. As @Seamo points out above, it’s likely to be something along the lines of a Krell patch or some other self-generating patch that depends on some chaotic noise. Some are as simple as applying sample-and-hold to white noise but some are more complex, using shift registers and interacting slow oscillators. There are quite a few modules that make use of chaotic cycling and strange attractors to produce randomness, including at least one unit that models the behaviour of squid axions (!) to generate randomness.

At the end of the day, it’s about what the person does with that source of randomness.
