It seems our species doesn’t usually take warnings of danger well. Only when we see the flames do we run away.
Not even then.
The problems began in Denver, where a heat wave pushed temperatures over 100 degrees. This was a problem for the fully-booked flight: Hot air is less dense, and coupled with the thinner air at Denver’s altitude, that makes it harder for a plane to take off.
My bets are less on the safety aspects and more on the fuel consumption.
Airlines are evil.
Isn’t a good portion of that due to the diversion of river waters around the region? Basically, like the Colorado River crisis, it’s mostly due to Big Agriculture growing things in regions that don’t work so well in the climate of the western half of North America. Of course, there’s crops that do but no one wants to consult the indigenous tribes of the West about how to do that since that’s not ‘profitable’.
Edit: In fact, there’s an article from 2016 about this with regard to the Great Salt Lake.
I’m wondering if this effort will help, but time will tell:
Guys, this is scary and dangerous heat for a huge number of people. Stay cool, stay safe and know your limits.
And yes, wwe should expect it to get worse.
