Floods, Fires, and Heat Domes (the climate change thread) (Part 1)

Post-sacking letter from person formerly running the COP26 effort for the host country. Boris Johnson’s involved, so it’s been a cock-up. This letter’s incendiary.

We are almost out of time to win the battle against climate change and start the process of climate recovery. C0 2 levels are over 415 ppm and climbing. The last time we saw numbers like this was three million years ago when sea levels were 20 metres higher than now and beech trees grew in Antarctica. The world’s attempts to get to grips with this epic Tragedy of the Commons are failing. Almost 50 per cent of our collective emissions have been pumped out since the first meeting of global leaders on climate at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 and emissions are 4 per cent higher than in 2015 when the Paris agreement was signed at COP21. Global scientists are clear that unless we break this trend now and start sustained reduction in global emissions with a clear net zero landing zone by 2050 or shortly afterwards, we will be dealing with unprecedented climate conditions and vast economic and human consequences within decades, not centuries.

The impact on the climate may mean an influx of permafrost-derived methane into the atmosphere in the mid-21st century, which is not currently accounted for in climate projections.

This is a brilliant thread:

Freak-outs are Mondays and Thursdays. Tuesday is plodding melancholia, Wednesday is vain hope. Fridays are for the future.

Some small but good news:

I wonder if “all new fossil fuel infrastructure” includes gas stations. 'Cause Maverick has been moving into our town with serious conviction lately and every time I drive past one of their stations under construction I’m just like “… y’all do remember what’s coming, right?”
