You do know that the word ā€œsatelliteā€ (from satelles, plural satellites) originally had nothing to do with astronomy? As far as I know the first use of the word in astronomical sense was when Pope was comparing Jupiter and its moons to the Roman gods, i.e.
And Jove’s satellites are less than Jove
A satelles was a subsidiary ruler and by extension a subsidiary state - so using ā€œSatellitesā€ for the buffer states of the USSR is perfectly correct.
Unfortunately illiteracy ruled when the word started to be used formally,so we got satellite rather than satelles.

It’s an interesting piece, and bears a contrast to his own earlier writings. In Down and Out in Paris and London, There’s a section where he slips into that sort of territory himself, where he’s describing the struggles of the Parisian poor, and their interaction with cheating shopkeepers,whose Jewishness is lingered upon in the telling.
