Gender-neutral playing cards

I was thinking more along the lines where pawns are assumed to be male and can only become queens after fighting their way across the board past many dangers.

Taking one of the images from the article for inspiration (as well as Crusader Kings), you could go with Monarch, Duke and Lord, and if anyone insists that dukes and lords are male you can always ask them if the current Duke of Normandy, Duke of Lancaster or Lord of Mann is a man or a woman.

The pawn doesn’t have to become a queen though… it promotes to the player’s choice of a bishop, knight, rook, or queen. Queen is just the clear power option. So much so that promoting to any other piece is referred to as underpromotion.
