That works for me, but it’s yet another hidden-undocumented-ability in that sense, which is unfortunate in the longterm.
The reason it is that way, is because “spam” is historically the only categorization of flag that most people agreed on, e.g. was consistently used in the way it was intended.
Turns out, everyone hates spam…
Not quite on topic, but I’ve no desire to start an entirely new thread for one question:
What’s with the new “Lounge” category?
I believe it may need a kind of 12 step AA approach.
Step 1. Stop reading the effing Daily Mail.
User buddybradley
has been banned for a process I’ve seen or had described to me multiple times in meatspace when marginalizing folks:
- Start a conversation
- Take issue with the way someone (strangely enough “someone” is very often a member of a minority or vulnerable group) answers the question
- Take over the conversation with a loud exclamation of “OH! Soandso THINKS X! ISN’T THAT INTERESTING! WHAT DOES EVERYONE ELSE THINK ABOUT X?”, essentially signaling the person out and trying to humiliate them
- When the person invariably responds, the attacker responds back with “What? It’s all in good fun! See! You’re no fun! Why won’t you just let us have our fun?”
It’s a vile pattern. It’s expressly designed to make the other person feel marginalized and humiliated.
The thing is, people start up debates and discussions all the time online. But when you start it by specifically calling out someone as the point of your new topic, rather than the point being answering a question, it’s really fucking obvious that the intent is to harass, not to actually have the discussion in the first place.
But even if we assume buddybradley
was just having a bit of fun, when they respond with comments literally like what I listed above - chastising the other user for not playing along and spoiling the “fun”? There’s no doubt at all.
My apologies to the other BBS member who had to be the subject of that harassment.
Oh yeah, that’s straight up sealioning. I have to admit I was like, “Is this sealioning?” and then went to flag it and it was already well since handled.
User timothy_krause
has been banned for disrupting a post “for fun” (otherwise known as intentional trolling). This is the second time this user has been suspended for this behaviour, apparently the first timeout did not have the intended effect.
da fuq? spamming this very thread?
If you come into the Wolf’s den, you best come prepared.
“Fixmybrain” would be a better name for that user.
I mean. I ain’t going to take my cars to Bangalore for repairs, and I suspect I am outside their free pickup zone. As are most users of the board…
My car breaks down in Bangalore all the time, but I will be taking my business elsewhere. Harumph!
User jandrese
has been banned for, again, derailing a topic decrying the “echo chamber” of the BBS. This is far from the first time this has happened with this user, but it will be the last.
Being flagged for defending racism as your reason to lament an echo chamber, then reposting to talk about how “these topics” (i.e., again, racism) bring out the “echo chamber”, suggests something about the overall stance of the now-ex-user that I will leave as an exercise for the reader.
User alboalt
has been given a brief timeout for trying to derail a topic on the horrific murder of eight people to, instead, be about them and their beliefs and how they are persecuted because folks disagree with their assessment.
User Gbaji
has been ejected for promoting “Incel” culture talking points in the BBS.
User blondie
has been given a timeout for using another equally-racist version of “all lives matter”: that “there is only one race”.
“Clever” pedantry in both examples, even if we have a good faith belief in the tone-deafness of the use case, cannot justify the use of phrases that are used as dog whistles by bigots who do use such phrases to deny personhood and agency to minorities and vulnerable populations. Do not do this.
On a similar vein, I would advise people not to say things like “I don’t even see race.” Closing your eyes does not make race go away, and ignoring the reality of racism in society at large by claiming immunity from it personally is not helping things one iota.
