Has Takei elaborated on this point? I don’t follow the Trekie/er websites. We only get a soundbite from him here.
Two points:
1 If it can happen to Dumbledore, it can happen to Sulu.
2 In Roddenberry’s origal vision, Spock was not an entirely logical character. Characters evolve.
With a suitable donor egg (probably artificial, by this point), Sulu donates one X sex chromosome and 23 autosomes, and his partner donates the others. Very straightforward to produce either a boy or a girl…
Fertility medicine might well have advanced to the point where an artificial Y chromosome would have been possible, to satisfy any lesbian interest.
YES! I can’t more than fully agree with Andersons approach to his character, he nailed it beautifully and drew me in with his truth and pain that powered his support and kept him buoyant in his role. My gripe is more towards the decision to automatically make a (black) man the villain, or turncoat, or untrustworthy, or … and the list goes on and on. But at the end of the day, the next day, after watching, it was the songs of Judas that kept playing in my head all day.

Best Judas EVER!
well judas is the star of the musical.
I’d be more concerned about Jesus being played by a whitey.
Maybe I’m weird, but I’ve always found that tacking on a character’s sexuality well after the fact to be more tokenistic than actually designing a character that way from the ground up. Can’t we have a new not-straight character who’s also well written?
Granted the answer is no in the new star trek series; I watched the first movie a couple times, liked it at first but started to loathe upon rewatches, haven’t touched the second.
your primitive designations of orientation and preference cannot even BEGIN to encompass Kirk’s appetites.
So what if Kelvinverse’s Sulu is gay or bi? We know the TOS Sulu is hetero, so what? It’s a different universe.
The Captain’s tastes were simple, but his methods were complex.
We found him with five partners, each of a different world and sex.
The Shore Police were on the way-we had no second chance.
We beamed him up in the nick of time-and the remnants of his pants.

Ok, now you’re tempting me to post some Warp 11. They’re a fun band but are usually very NSFW.

Not enough likes in the world, seriously.
Yes indeed! Most troubling to say the least.
Interestingly at around the same time a fun comvo started over on the IO9 side and one of the more interesting posters over there (LostEngineer, the man’s been a gem over there for years) and I are going to set up a “Missing Stories” thing where we put together a set of timelines and interactions between a whole bunch of Pop Culture things and then write little short stories that connect everything together.
He already threw out a pretty hilarious Brienne-gets-her-Phasma-armor-and-starts-kicking-butt-in-Westeros concept. This is going to be fun.
Come now, for all the original movie being, you know, a good movie, it doesn’t have this:
I did not initially agree with or understand George T’s point, but I’m very glad he has a platform to make it, and I’ve benefitted from his perspective. He’s quite attached the to character in a way that I’m not and the implication that Sulu was ever in the closet would be unwelcome. The alternative suggestion that “stuff happened and it’s a different timeline” and this somehow made him gay is worse. George doesn’t do closets.
Kind of a bummer though, because this seems likely to be intended as an appreciative nod by writers to George’s advocacy work for LGBTQ rights.
Dude just loves spock.
