You’re right to emphasise that this was always a myth, it was always a propaganda view- because real humans don’t fit into these little boxes that it tries to push us into.
Which also emphasises the importance of the project in the OP. Simply telling the truth about sex and sexuality is important, because not talking about it, and having people not know that what they are feeling is normal is a key part of the repression that people need liberating from.
