GM POST

As de Courcy charges down the corridor towards the right-hand guard, Jibrīl moves to flank and shifts his aim to its knees. However, his second blow is even less impressive than his first; yet another air swing.

Meanwhile, Thwip reloads and Ranar continues his charge towards the left guard. As he does so, Hawk steps forward and extends his spear, calling on the spirits to protect the dwarven warrior.

In response, the left guard adjust its grip, choking down on the halberd shaft for short-range use. In contrast, the right guard ignores the ineffective Jibril and thrusts towards the charging de Courcy. Although the strike is on target, the mercenary easily avoids the clumsy weapon.

Stepping behind the right guard, Jibrīl shifts his aim. Abandoning any thought of defence, he aims a mighty blow at his opponent’s knee. The strike bites home, buckling the thin metal poleyn; as its knee collapses, the guard tumbles to the floor. Seeing this, de Courcy changes targets, charging to flank the left guard.

As Thwip takes aim at Ranar’s opponent, the dwarf steps to the left and aims his hammer at a knee. Although the blow lands, it glances off with minimal damage. In return, the left guard thrusts at Ranar, who retreats and deflects the blow with his shield. The fallen guard on the right unsuccessfully attempts to stand while shortening the reach on its own halberd.

In the background, Hawk cautiously approaches the fight, while Aronn limps along behind him.

Having downed his opponent, Jibrīl now attempts to disarm, switching his aim to the guard’s hands. However, while the blow lands, it does not disable.

On the other side of the corridor, de Courcy slashes at the right guard’s knee. Again, although the blow lands and does some damage, it lacks to power to cripple. From the opposite side of the guard, Ranar also continues to hammer at its kneecaps. Although the guard still does not fall, its leg armour is beginning to look decidedly dented.

In return, the rightmost guard continues to ignore Jibrīl and thrusts again at de Courcy. Once more, the Aralaise swordsmen skips aside. Meanwhile, the left hand guard again strikes Ranar, and the blow is once again deflected by Ranar’s shield.

While Thwip continues to aim at the still-standing halberdier, Hawk and Aronn continue their slow approach down the corridor, straight into Thwip’s line of fire.

Continuing to hack at the downed guard’s hands, Jibrīl manages to land a clean blow, severing a number of fingers. Although the guard continues to try and strike back, its clumsy one-handed poke with the halberd is wildly off target.

Back with the left guard, de Courcy launches another slash at the back of the guard’s knee. This strike lands perfectly, cleanly severing the knee joint; the left guard joins its companion on the floor. Seizing the opportunity, Ranar steps in and aims a blow at his fallen opponents arm, crumpling the thin plate into immobile uselessness.

In response, both guards attempt clumsy one-handed strikes at their tormenters. Both strikes miss.

As Hawk and Thwip continue to watch from a distance, Aronn steps between them, muttering under his breath. As he does so, his staff begins to…well, it’s a bit hard to describe exactly what it’s doing. “Glowing with black light” is the phrase that comes to mind, although “glowing” is the wrong word. It is as if the staff had become a portal into a frozen, dead void; it crackles with power.

Up at the front of the action, Jibrīl launches another swing at the right guard’s remaining hand. His blow lands with some force, but is insufficient to cripple. On the other side, both Ranar and de Courcy batter at the left guard’s remaining arm, with similar inconclusive results.

In a coincidence that would be comical were the situation less deadly, both of the downed guards launch ineffective thrusts at their opponents, and the pair of them simultaneously fumble and drop their weapons.

Again abandoning caution, Jibrīl throws his full body weight into a shattering blow at the right guard’s breastplate, creasing it dramatically. On the other side, de Courcy aims a slash at the left guard’s neck. However, the results of this strike are rendered irrelevant by Ranar, who slams his hammer down in an all-out strike to the chest that appears to silence the guard for good.

Meanwhile, Hawk pokes at the surviving guard with his spear. Although on target, the blow does not penetrate, merely glancing off the armour. As he does so, Aronn steps forward, striking with his staff at the fallen and disarmed halberdier’s back. As the blow connects, the black light from his staff flows into his opponent, crackling through the metal with a eerie screeching sound. As it does so, the guard spasms and then lies still.

(GM Note: Hawk, you’re down to 4 FP remaining; everyone is unharmed)

Thwip

– God in Heaven. Are we going to have to smash our way through this vault? –

Thwip stands up and shoulders his rifle. He takes small comfort in that he was right about the jointing of the armor. He’s also starting to feel deeply afraid of Aronn.

– He is hiding a lot from us. The level of his magical skills being one secret of many so far. And he pushed for everyone to throw themselves against the two sentinels before using his magic. Sure, maybe his curse holds him back, but it doesn’t seem to temper his willingness to use us a fodder. –

Thwip walks past the others to the sentinel he shot. He takes note that everyone, while breathing heavily, are uninjured. A small bolt of joy jolts through him at this. He has been growing fond of the Pinkies and Thumb. Kneeling over the armor, he sticks a finger in the hole to feel for the bullet.

(Player note: Should he feel nothing behind it, he’ll attempt to reach inside and retrieve the bullet to see if it’s still usable. Even if it isn’t usable he’ll keep it to study the impact properties of that type of metal.)

GM POST

Investigating the bullet hole, Thwip finds that there is nothing in the armour apart from a beetle buzzing around inside.

Rolling it over, Thwip notes a matching hole through the backplate. Apparently, his bullet punched clean through.

Ranar Bolijyr

Catching his breath and looking around to see that the others are ok, Ranar takes a moment to examine the craftmanship of the now inert armor. (Not that any of it would fit him, but the guards were odd.)

@nimelennar @Daaksyde @Mitchell @William_George @daneel

GM POST

The armour is clearly of Wazifi origin. Although it is well made, it’s more like an oversized suit of parade armour than serious battle wear; designed for decoration rather than utility. It shows no sign of having ever seen action before.

The fittings also suggest that it was never intended to be worn; the straps and jointing aren’t quite right.

Thwip

– These things were made to be some sort of paper dragon. Good thing too. They would have impaled us if they were better made or had better magicks.–

He he nods at Ranar as he inspects the armor. Tapping the empty shell, “Good fir palace show guards but not fir real kombat, mebbe.”

Thwip peers around in the dark for any sign of his missing bullet. A hole in the wall would be good to see. It would mean that the vault was meant to have humans in it and some thought for comfort was given. And that not every intersection has a death trap in it.

“I’m not seeyin inny skelllytins nor scratchins on t’ plate. Eater were t’ first t’ visit since tey closed tis up, ir tey did a good joba scarin’ folks away.”

He peers deeper into the gloom.

“But it might also mean tat tere’s gon t’ be lots off more deadly obstakals ahead.”

Nicolas de Courcy

“No doubt, my friend. But, since Lord Arron wasn’t generous enough to pay us to chase the most chaiste and fair ladies of Tredroy, unfortunately…”

De Courcy gestures theatrically towards the dark, deeper into the vault.

“Lay on, MacDuff, and damned be he who first cries ‘Hold! Enough.’”

Peering down the corridor, you see that it continues past the guards for another ten yards or so, before coming to a door.

Blue Hawk

Hawk lends the spirits’ aid to Ranar without hesitation, and is gratified to see the mine-man turn away the blows of the metal-men.

The “black light” of Lord Arron’s staff disturbs him slightly, but only slightly: every shaman that he has met, and the tribesman has met more than a few, has had different abilities granted by the spirits. Unless he learns otherwise, he’ll file that particular ability as “esoteric” but not suspicious.

When the fighting finishes, Hawk silently thanks the spirits for their aid and dismisses them. The rush of the fight drains from him, and he feels weary from summoning the spirits.

As de Courcy points deeper into the cavern and utters an odd statement as incomprehensible as something Thwip might say, the shaman raises his hand. “Can wait a few minutes? Calling upon the spirits to help fight has me tired.”

Jibrīl Al-Las’as

Jibrīl walks down the corridor to the door and takes a look.

@nimelennar @Daaksyde @Mitchell @William_George @daneel

GM POST

The door appears to be of identical tight-fitting construction to the previous one, except that this one is hinged to open with a pull, towards the hallway you are in.

There is no handle.

Jibrīl Al-Las’as

Seeing no handle on the door itself, Jibrīl looks around for a switch in the walls or floor, a false panel or somesuch.

@nimelennar @Daaksyde @Mitchell @William_George @daneel

GM POST

You can’t see anything relevant to the door; the hallway is unadorned apart from a line of three domed, perforated metal features running down the middle of the ceiling.

The ceiling is about ten feet high, so you can only see them dimly.

Ranar Bolijyr

Ranar nods at Thwip. “Unless they’re new, or had been replaced. In any case, the armor was intended to be useless. It wasn’t found and used for this, it was built for it. And whoever put it here may have expected it to be defeated.”

Thwip

(Player note: This is under the assumption Jabril told us everything he found.)

He replies to Ranar, “Tat’s m’ worry. Paper dragons leadin’ us t’ over confy dense.”

He stands up and walks over to investigate the peculiarities in the door and ceiling as pointed out by Jabril. He glowers at the door and rubs his head in keep with his habit when he thinks. He then addresses the whole party. “My crowbah kin probly open tis door wit some off yir muscles, but…” Thwip looks up and points at the circles on the ceiling.

“Ifin tese aren’t traps intended t’ go off win we pry open t’ doors ten tis place was really was designed by an iddy-yot.”

Blue Hawk

Hawk looks up at the indicated domed fixtures, trying to determine their nature.

“Traps, maybe, but this is supposed to be a nice place for those who are here rightly, as well as to be a bad place for others. For welcome guests… Lanterns, maybe? Maybe using magic?”

The shaman looks back at the previous door, checking for handles on the inside.

“If it is a trap, someone should make sure this door does not close and trap us in.”

Ranar Bolijyr

“Ornate keyholes?” Ranar looks at the halberds and tries to compare their length to the height of the ceiling. But there were only two halberds… “Eh, wouldn’t make sense that there’s three.”

Nicolas de Courcy

De Courcy follows Ranar’s eye to the halberds.

“If we tie one of the lightsources onto the end of one of those pole-arms, we could get it up high enough to cast some good light on one of those potential Grates of Death,” he says jerking his head upwards.

“The lantern may be the best available option…,” he said, gesturing as if balancing his free hand and the torch.

" …Lord Arron would likely object."

@nimelennar @Daaksyde @Mitchell @William_George @daneel

GM POST

Hooking a lantern onto one of the oversized halberds provides an awkward but useful light.

On closer inspection, the metal fixtures look to be about a yard across, and appear to be made of thoroughly verdigris-covered copper or brass. Cobwebs old and new cover the gaps. The light isn’t good enough to get a clear look at what, if anything, lies behind them.

The walls of the chamber are unadorned solid stone. The stone is cut very cleanly, likely by magic.

Thwip

Scratching his chin he eyes the better lit domes. He looks down at his own slight frame, then he looks to Ranar.

– No. He’s mighty, but lacks the height. The others are tall but only one seems to be tall enough. –

Thwip addresses Nicolas. “Kin yi lift me up tere? I want t’ git a better looksee.”
