Aronn, standing guard by the door as Hawk meditates in the corner, gives the hallway a quick check before turning towards Thwip and replying.

“You could construct a device such as this in many ways, although I doubt that the human dabblers are aware of more than a few. In this case, I suspect that the view is achieved through a binding of the local air elementals. The spirits of the air are very territorial, but their territories are stratified; the boundaries are in altitude more than region. That is the likely reason why you can shift the view great distances laterally but not vertically.”

As he finishes speaking, a scuffing noise from the corridor causes him to whip his head back in that direction. Swearing in Elvish, he leaps towards Thwip as a pair of Things charge through the door.

[Thwip, wotcha doing? The setup is as per the map; Aronn near the corridor door, but moving towards you; Hawk meditating by the anti-magic room door; Thwip with rifle ready just inside the anti-magic room. Hawk, it’ll take you a few seconds to snap out of your trance]

Ranar Bolijyr

The sight, sound, and smell of the bubbly tar-thing make Ranar a bit queasy. It briefly calls to mind a memory of his clan-aunt’s rather eccentric cooking - those strange mystery dishes that no sane dwarf would prepare. He hunches down and tightens up behind his shield, leaning forward to retch just as a Thing comes flying toward him and slams into his shield.

At Nic’s call of “Back 10 paces” he nods and begins carefully moving back, keeping behind his shield while trying not to step on Nic’s toes.

Thwip

“ENEMIES!”

Hoping his shout and the movement of Aronn distracts the things from the meditating shaman. To keep their attention Thwip fires a shot off as Aronn passes him into the room.

He remembers to close his eyes as he pulls the trigger.

As Nic shouts for the retreat, the ballistic Thing slams into Ranar’s shield, leaving a stream of entrails as it tears across the spiked boss. As it slides off the shield, it explodes into light and dust.

While Ranar and de Courcy struggle to see through the glare, half a dozen tentacles fly towards Eabd.

The first whips toward his head, and is sliced almost completely through by Eabd’s longsword. Another two attempt to catch his sword, but the steel swordsman flicks his blade out of the way. The last three, however, wrap securely around Eabd’s leg.

Spinning his longsword in his hands, Eabd slashes at the tentacles gripping his leg. But the golem’s expert swordsmanship is matched by the blob’s wicked speed, as the tentacles writhe away from his blade.

Jibril joins the fray, his tulwar biting deep into the thick, glistening tar as Nic slides his rapier between Ranar and Jibril, carving away his own slice. A whistling shriek and a quiver erupts as the blades send black muck flying, but the tentacles retain their hold on Eabd.

As Ranar’s axe swings down, the tentacles suddenly pull back above the blob, taking Eabd with them. The metal warrior flails wildly as he is whipped through the air by his ankle.

As Aronn runs for cover with a pair of Things hot on his heels, Thwip hastily brings his rifle to his shoulder and squeezes the trigger.

Instead of the usual thwip-crack, a bullet limply plops from the barrel as the rifle releases a loud hiss from the vicinity of the air reservoir.

Thwip

a bullet limply plops from the barrel as the rifle releases a loud hiss from the vicinity of the air reservoir

“ACH! SHIBAL!”

Thwip pushes Aronn behind him into the anti-magic room in the hopes it’ll work on disabling whatever magic is powering the Things. He’ll worry about melee when it comes to it. He is hoping that it won’t come to it.

As he throws himself back after Aronn he shouts again, “BLUE HAWK! ENEMIES!” Hopefully all of his noise and motion will keep attention off of the shaman. Thwip thinks he’s probably going to need a visit from his spirits again.

Blue Hawk

The shaman’s eyes snap open at the sound of his name. He takes a moment to come back to himself and then…

Spirits, didn’t they think to lock the door behind them as they left?

Some wiser part of him snarks back at him, Well, you didn’t suggest it either, and Hawk must grudgingly admit that that part of his mind has a point.

Shoving aside his worry of what might have happened to the others if they are letting Things get past him, he has two priorities here: First, his own survival, and then Lord Arron’s. Both of those purposes are served by getting into the null-magic room, so he gets to his feet and lunges in that direction.

As Thwip drops his rifle and drags Aronn into the mana-null room, one of the Things follows close on his heels. As it leaps towards Aronn’s unprotected back, claws outstetched, it passes the threshold of the room.

As it does so, it explodes into light and dust…right in front of Thwip, whose vision dissolves in a flash.

Out in the map room, Hawk scrambles to his feet as the second Thing dives at him in a flying tackle. The two of them tumble to the ground.

[Hawk, you’re on your back in close combat with a Thing, a couple of yards outside the door of the anti-magic room. But you aren’t yet grappled. Thwip, you’re dazzled; -3 to attack. Getting your sword out would take a second, but you could try to wrestle immediately]

Ranar Bolijyr

Ranar, surprised by the unexpected lack of impact as the tentacles snapped out of the way, watches in horror as Eabd, the armor man, faster than any of them, is snatched away. Retreat forgotten completely, he lunges forward yelling “Charge!”

Thwip

The world goes sideways as Thwip tries to shake off the dazzle. With Aronn behind him he looks out in to the larger room to see a lumpy blob of arms legs and spears.

– No time. –

Thwip draws his sword and charges out into the room to help the shaman fight off his attacker. He hopes he’ll be able to tell which lump he has to stab before he gets to them.

Blue Hawk

Hawk had managed to get to his feet, was just about ready to lunge towards the door and safety…

And a Thing had knocked his legs right out from under them.

The Thing, its putrid smell almost causing him to gag in its nearness, hovers over him, not yet having had enough time to capitalize on its high-ground advantage.

The shaman uses that delay to try to get his knee up between them, and tries to roll the Thing away from the door while simultaneously shoving it away from him. If it works, he’ll be able to use the momentum from pushing the Thing away to get closer to the door of the no-magic room.

Hawk scrambles towards the door as a furiously blinking Thwip steps forward and drags his cutlass from the sheath. A snarling Thing leaps after him in a furious pounce, but fails to catch hold of the frantically dodging shaman.

As Thwip brings his cutlass slashing down, Hawk ducks beneath the blade and rolls into the no-mana room. The Thing leaps after him, directly into the path of Thwip’s cut, leaving a savage slice in its back and slamming it to the ground.

As the Thing snatches at Thwip’s feet, he skips backwards into the no-mana room. Scrambling after him, the wounded Thing passes the threshold of the room, disintegrating into a starburst much as its companion did.

Thwip

The goblin looks at his sword. Then he looks at his companions to make sure they’re in one piece. Then back at his sword again. Then he looks out the door.

“I shall go an’ lock t’ dor.”

He breathes deeply before continuing.

“Ifin I die ten you try my new plan t’ wait fir t’ men onna surface t’ come doon here and act assa distractshun for t’ Tings. Ten yi leg it oota here in t’ chaos. Ifin I don’t die we still try my plan for I fear it seems tat are friends half failed in tere mission an’ were oota options.”

He breathes deeply twice more and sword in hand he charges out towards the door and the lock on it that is now the most important thing in Thwips life.

GM POST

As Ranar charges, the Uberthing lifts Eabd high into the air before whipping the golem down like a hammer at the dwarven warrior. Ranar skips aside, bringing himself within axe range of the creature’s body as Eabd slams brutally into the floor.

Meanwhile, the other four tentacles reach back and bring forth a quartet of Things, placing them down in a position to flank Ranar and the door.

Recovering from their momentary shock, Nic and Jibril leap forwards to assist Ranar. Jibril steps and slashes at the Thing to the right of the doorway; however, the Thing ducks under his blade as it leaps in close, snatching at his sword arm. In response, the Wazifi skips backwards, ripping his blade across the Thing’s arms, carving deep wounds.

As he does so, however, the Thing from the other side of the doorway charges into him, knocking him to the ground. As he falls, his torch plunges into the shallow water, sputtering out. Moving to assist, de Courcy steps forwards and whips his blade across both of the Things, but manages to connect with neither one.

In the chamber, the pair of Things surrounding Ranar press their attack. The first grabs at his shield, almost succeeding in gaining a hold. The second snatches for his axe arm, and does succeed in briefly gaining a grip before Ranar tears his arm free.

Raising Eabd high into the air again, the Uberthing shifts two of the three tentacles grasping him to his head and begins to pull. Meanwhile two of the unoccupied tentacles reach for Ranar while another two fly toward de Courcy. Ranar skips backwards, away from the grasping monstrosity. Nic does likewise, whipping his sword across in a vicious slash as he does so, sending ichor flying.

As Eabd struggles futilely, Jibril scrambles to his knees. The Thing standing above him snatches at his sword arm, but fails to catch a hold. The other Thing in the doorway charges at de Courcy, but similarly fails in finding its target. Nicolas steps back and carves another slice from the Thing before him, his subtlety easily defeating its attempt at evasion.

Meanwhile, in the room, the pair of Things make another leap for Ranar’s shield and axe. Ranar defeats the attack on his shield with a simple shift of the board; the clutch at his axe he evades with similar ease. Stepping to his flank, he ignores the Things and brings his axe tearing down into the main body of the Uberthing. The creature whips a tentacle back in a desperate attempt to deflect the blow, but merely succeeds in substituting a different target as Ranar’s axe leaves a severed tentacle twitching on the floor.

High above the battle, Eabd’s metalwork succumbs to the Uberthing’s violence, releasing a burst of blue light at the helmet separates from his armour. The struggling torso drops limp against the tentacle still holding it.

The remaining three tentacles fly towards Ranar’s shield and axe. The grab at his shield is evaded with a retreating dodge; the grasp at the axe is deflected with the rim of his shield.

Rising to his feet, Jibril fast-draws his janbiya and rips it across the Thing’s belly. Although the blade bites home, the cut is shallow; damage is minimal. In response, the Thing claws at his face, but fails to catch the lithe rogue. Beside him, de Courcy steps back for another slash, but his blow also goes astray.

The two Things in the room again leap for Ranar’s axe and shield, but again fail to gain a hold. Continuing to ignore them, the dwarven warrior again steps forwards and hacks at the body of the Uberthing in a mad frenzy. Striking with furious speed, his axe tears into the blob twice, rending gigantic wounds each time.

As the second blow strikes home, a cataclysmic shriek erupts throughout the dungeon. It seems beyond mere sound, striking directly into your brains.

As the shriek sounds, all four of the Things explode into dust and light. Beyond that flash, a greater inferno fills the room and the corridor, flaying your eyes with a mix of white, red and black. All of you are knocked to the ground, stunned.

[all of you, Hawk, Aronn and Thwip included, are knocked down and stunned. The combat group is also blinded]

– What? I? Urgh! –

Ranar Bolijyr

With cold comfort of stone beneath him and echoes from the blazing flashes of light still fading against the blackness in his vision, Ranar struggled to move. “I think that might’ve been bad.” Was that just a thought, or did he say it out loud (or even shout it)? He couldn’t tell from the ringing in his ears.

As the dust settles, you slowly regain your wits and vision.

The Uberthing is gone; small patches of black ooze dissolve into smoke as you blink your eyes clear.

Eabd’s beheaded armour lies motionless in the centre of the room. His helmet rests in the far corner.

Thwip

– Whu–

Thwip slowly brings himself to his feet. He leans on the map table for support, his original plan of locking the door to the map room forgotten. His brain being sloshed around the inside of his skull several times in the last hour is starting to affect him. Plans go forgotten in the concern that he may soon lose the ability to button his shirt.

“Vat iz zee current taktikal zituation?” he says to the map. He’s not really sure if he’s asking the map or anyone within earshot at this point.
